How to Play IRON NEST
This overview compresses the official FAQ dependencies into readable stages. It does not mean the game defines exactly six steps or one physical order for every loading and aiming control.
Quick answer
To play IRON NEST, read the fire mission, locate and measure the target, calculate a firing solution, match the ammunition and charges to it, set and arm the gun, then fire and confirm the result. That is the working loop, not a complete station manual.

This overview compresses the official FAQ dependencies into readable stages. It does not mean the game defines exactly six steps or one physical order for every loading and aiming control.
What the IRON NEST gameplay loop actually asks you to do
IRON NEST turns one fire mission into a chain of connected information. Orders tell you what the battery is being asked to hit. Map work turns that request into a location and range. The calculator converts those inputs into a usable solution. The loader and gun controls must then reflect that solution before the selected gun is armed and fired. The result tells you whether the mission can proceed or whether an earlier input needs another look. The six stages below are editorial signposts. Controls may be prepared in a different physical order, and later missions add context left to their own walkthroughs.
1. Read the orders
Start with the received mission information. Identify the designated target, the details you have been given and anything the orders still require you to determine. The input at this stage is the mission itself; the output is a clear target and a short list of facts you need for the map and calculator.
If the mission-specific wording or objective is the problem, move to the Missions section rather than guessing from a number visible elsewhere in the turret.
2. Locate and measure
Use the mission information, tactical map and its tools to establish the target position and the range required by the next stage. You may need to read a marked location, work from bearings or take map measurements. You are done when you have the location and measurement required for calculation, not merely when you have moved the map. The triangulation and map references own the detailed methods; this page supplies no fixed coordinates or universal shortcut.
3. Calculate the firing inputs
Enter the measured information into the ballistic calculator and read the outputs for the shot you are preparing. The input is the target geometry; the output is the solution that connects ammunition, charges and gun settings. This overview gives no universal charge band, bearing, elevation or copied single-run value. Use the dedicated calculator material when you need the operational workflow.
4. Match the ammunition and charges
Use the calculated solution as the input for preparing ammunition and charges. You are done when the shell choice, charge selection and calculation all describe the same intended shot. This is a consistency check, not one mandatory order for every loading lever. The shell and Requisition references own item-specific detail; this page does not claim a current, exhaustive rule for unloading or recovering charges.
5. Set and arm the gun
Carry the same firing solution into the gun controls: apply the required elevation and rotation, select the intended gun and arm it when ready. The output is a prepared gun whose ammunition and aim agree with the calculation. Individual missions own objective-specific details. The official FAQ identifies these responsibilities at a high level, but does not establish an exhaustive current-build control list.
6. Fire, read the result and continue
Fire after the prepared state agrees with the solution, then read the mission response. The output is either confirmation that the objective can advance or a reason to re-check an earlier input category. Mission pages own exact objective states. The official overview also includes handling the result and standing down between assignments; it does not support one correction for every miss.
Start with Calibration Fire, not a separate IRON NEST tutorial mode
Calibration Fire is Campaign mainline mission 1 in Version 1.0 build 24750322. Its public objective asks you to plot a firing trajectory, fire high-explosive ammunition at the designated target and confirm the shot's accuracy. Once that task is complete, the mission directs you to stand down and use the bunk.
IN-GAME TEXT · Version 1.0 (1622), Patch #5, build 24750322.
That makes Calibration Fire the evidence-backed Campaign starting point for learning the minimum loop. It does not prove that IRON NEST has a separate mode called Tutorial. An internal asset name is not a public mode name.
Use Calibration Fire to understand what each station contributes, not to memorize one set of numbers. Carry one target through map work, calculation and firing, then use the routing section for the Campaign order or published mission walkthroughs.
Find the right IRON NEST walkthrough for the problem in front of you
This Hub explains the shared mental model. The next page should own the specific answer you need. Choose the problem that matches where your information chain broke:
You need the Campaign order or a mission walkthrough: open the published mission index for the ordered list and available mission pages.
You have bearings but not a target position: follow the triangulation core workflow for the geometry and verification steps.
You need to understand built-in map tools or symbols: use the map tools reference instead of copying a location from another run.
You have a range and need firing inputs: continue with the calculator workflow, where the calculation owns its operational detail.
You need to choose a shell for a target: compare the shell-selection guidance without turning one mission's choice into a universal rule.
You want ending help and accept limited spoilers: start with the low-spoiler endings answer rather than mixing outcome routes into your first firing lesson.
These links point only to material already published in the site catalog. They are not placeholders for candidate pages. If your problem is a precise control interaction or a universal miss-correction formula, this first edition does not pretend that an evidence-backed answer exists here.
Guides, Missions and Field Data answer different questions
Use Guides for methods: turning bearings into a location, following a calculation workflow or choosing the next verified explanation. A guide also states where its method stops.
Use Missions when an objective, sequence or failure point belongs to one assignment. The mission index is also the place to check Campaign order.
Use Field Data for a versioned lookup such as map tools, shells, Requisition records or medals. A data page records an item or interface; it is not automatically a walkthrough.
A shell can have recorded data, appear in a mission and require choice guidance. Open the section that matches your question instead of treating one page as an all-purpose manual.
Beginner checks, not universal IRON NEST tips
Before firing, consider one consistency pass. Check that the target you located matches the orders, that the calculator inputs belong to it, and that the output matches the ammunition, charges, aim and gun selection actually prepared.
If the shot does not produce the expected result, sort the problem before changing a number:
Locate: Did you identify and measure the intended target?
Calculate: Did the calculator receive the intended inputs, and are you reading the matching output?
Prepare: Do the shell and charges correspond to that solution?
Aim: Is the selected, armed gun set to the intended bearing and elevation?
These are diagnostic directions, not a recovery algorithm. A short or long result does not prove which input is wrong. Return to the guide that owns the uncertain stage, then compare corrected information with the gun state.
Version and evidence limits
The Campaign order and Calibration Fire wording were checked against IRON NEST Version 1.0 (1622), Patch #5, build 24750322. The official FAQ workflow was reviewed on August 30, 2026. Later patches may change mission text, controls or data.
This edition does not cover every station or lever, current unloading and charge recovery, fixed firing parameters or universal troubleshooting. Those gaps require current-build extraction or reproducible play evidence that separates a system rule from one player's route.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play IRON NEST?
Read the mission, locate and measure the target, calculate the shot, match the ammunition and charges, set and arm the gun, then fire and confirm the result. The official FAQ supports this overview, not an exhaustive control list or exactly six fixed steps.
What should I do first in IRON NEST?
Start with Calibration Fire if you are beginning the Campaign. Build 24750322 records it as mainline mission 1 and asks you to plot a trajectory, fire high-explosive ammunition at the designated target and confirm accuracy.
Is Calibration Fire the tutorial?
It is the first formal Campaign mission, but the build evidence does not establish a separate Tutorial mode. An internal asset label is not enough to rename the mode or classify the first four Campaign missions as tutorials.
Does IRON NEST teach every station and control?
No. This page explains the major responsibilities supported by the official FAQ, but does not document every current station or control. A complete inventory would require additional current-build evidence.
Which page should I open when I get stuck?
Match the problem to its owner: Missions for an assignment, Guides for a method and Field Data for a versioned lookup. The routing list above sends each problem to a published page.
Why did my first shot miss?
A miss alone does not identify one universal correction. Re-check the target location, calculator inputs, prepared ammunition and charges, and the selected gun's aim before changing range or bearing.
